We were in southeast Poland last week covering the story of the errant Ukrainian missiles that sadly killed two Poles in a border village and we decided to try to pop across the border to Lviv. Usually trips to Ukraine involve meticulous planning and intensive safety preparations, none of which we had time to do. Nonetheless, we were able to get a driver to take us across the border and onwards to Lviv, where we stayed at the Bank Hotel, a place well known to our CBC crew. We found a city much transformed by the Russian rocket attacks – no longer warm and welcoming, Lviv was black and cold and forbidding. Of course, it won’t change the trajectory of the war for Russia but the suffering of civilians is real and concerning. Stores, such as the ones above, attempt to stay open and accept cash for purchases. But the cumulative impact of such attacks will likely severely hurt Ukraines economy.
