In Iceland, a place that’s losing its ice

Posted on October 15, 2021October 15, 2021 by chris.brown

Our team is spending a week in Iceland to file some climate change related stories in the lead up to the Glasgow COP26 gathering. Not quite in Europe and too far to be in North America, Iceland is an intriguing mix of the familiar and the extremely exotic. The landscapes are foreign; volcanos and moss-covered lava as far as the eye can see. And yet, the city is a cool mix of funky and functional. The best view of Reykjavik is from the cathedral in mid-city. It is only from above that you can see the colours of the roofs of the homes really pop out. Everyone speaks English and is incredibly friendly. Even though the weather has been brutal, and its in mid-October, there are tourists everywhere – no doubt relishing the chance to finally travel after COVID. Climate change hits harder here than most other places. There’s still ice in Iceland – but glaciers are already disappearing.

Volcanoes and geothermal energy are Iceland’s defining features.
